More than two thirds of all Australians use social media everyday, and Facebook is the most popular social network in the world (1.71 billion users per month). Having an active social media presence is a powerful, cost-effective way of communicating with customers and prospects, and generating leads.
Here are the latest stats on social media for business in Australia.
What is Engagement?
Business success on social media requires more than posting a link to your website. You need to generate engagement, which is easier said than done.
Before we get started, let’s clarify what Facebook engagement actually is. According to Facebook, these three things constitute engagement:
- Likes on your post
- Comments on your post
- Shares of your post
Simple as that.
Why Does Engagement Matter?
Engagement plays a huge role in determining how many of your fans will see your Facebook posts. And the more fans who see your post, the more likely they will generate leads.
So here’s how it works.
Facebook monitors likes, comments, and shares, and if none of your fans are taking these actions, Facebook thinks they’re not interested. If Facebook thinks your fans are not interested, then they won’t show them your posts, and your organic reach will decrease.
If your posts consistently provoke these actions, your organic reach will increase, and more people will see your posts, including your promotional posts. Sound good?
Another thing to remember is this. When a fan engages with one of your posts, it appears on their timeline. Their Facebook friends will see they’ve liked or commented on something your business has posted. Then, your reach will increase exponentially.
3 Facebook Post Ideas to Increase Engagement
You want to encourage engagement on your Facebook posts, but you’re not sure where to start. Try out these three Facebook post ideas.
Facebook Post Idea #1: Text on Images
There’s no second-guessing the power of images on social media, and combining images and text almost always increases engagement. Let’s take a look at an example.
Here’s a post with a fact about tomatoes featuring an image without text: 18 likes, and 1 share.
Look what happens when I put the fact over the image.
The likes doubled, and the shares increased 17 times! Incredible, huh? There are many free, online programs that make it quick and easy to add text to your images. My favourites are Canva and Design Feed.
Facebook Post Idea #2: Ask a Question
People love to give their opinion or share an experience, so question posts are effective in boosting engagement. You can ask for your fans’ opinions, experiences, and ideas to increase comments, or you can ask questions that elicit a positive, emotional response to increase likes.
One of my favourite question posts is a ‘Did you know…’ question. Just ensure you don’t give everything away – leave room for discussion. Here’s an example:
Facebook Post Idea #3: Post Sharable Content
If you post information that is truly of value to your fans, they will click on it, and/or share it. So don’t be afraid of sharing industry tips and tricks. Plus, providing valuable content helps establish your business’s authority.
When it comes to getting content clicked on and shared, your post will need an eye-catching image, like this one:
